Rolls-Royce

Silver Spirit

1987

Quasi museum quality?

Maybe – maybe not, but certainly one of the better condition late 80s Silver Spirits you will find!

Presenting a Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit in rare Balmoral Green with gold fine lines and magnolia Connolly hide interior. The seats are finished with dark green piping that coordinate with the exterior beautifully. This would arguably be amongst the nicer 80s Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit in the country.

The car was originally delivered in Canada so it has the European style full size headlamps instead of the unattractive 4 x rectangular headlamps (required for North American compliance at the time). We believe these update the car and look a lot better as it is what the designers had intended. The car has a very interesting ownership. Its first owners were the Eaton’s:

The Eaton family of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, were owners of the Eaton’s department stores, a national chain that was founded in 1869, and became bankrupt in 1999. At the family’s height, their net worth was around $2 billion. Today, after the store’s demise, “The Boys”—John, Fred, Thor and George—are collectively worth around $450 million.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and author Rod McQueen has dubbed them as “Canada’s royal family”, with the CBC describing the Eatons as “homegrown aristocracy” which drew comparisons to the influential Kennedy family. The Eatons were well known for their lavish lifestyle and generous philanthropy. Today, they and their wives and children continue to hold prominent positions in Toronto’s society circles. (You will see all the “club membership” stickers on the front window as part legacy of the Eaton ownership which we will remove of course).

In line with their “Canadian Royalty”, there is a flagstaff mounted on the front fender which was used to display flags of dignitaries and VIPs they had as guests. It is rumoured that overseas royalty, including member of the British Monarchy, were ushered around in this very car.

We purchased the car from the original 1st owners and have since handled the sale and re-purchase to the next 2 owners/collectors, so we know the car well and have been maintaining her accordingly.

This is a true 9½ out of 10 car that is very close to show quality standard. It has an amazing 49,500 original miles (80,000klms) and the car simply looks like it is only half a dozen years old. Primarily all original paint, and finishes. The interior even smells like a brand new Rolls-Royce (I will never forget the smell when I visited the Crewe factory in the late 1990s!)

An impeccably maintained example in excellent condition and presents beautifully. It sports original specification and factory fitted Goodyear Eagle whitewall tyres – these are no longer available and because they are old, will be changed as part of our Predelivery Commissioning program.

The body and paint is in very good condition with only slight imperfections. With the car still “dressed” in its original single stage paint it is not perfect, by definition, but it does have an excellent original presentation. It is certainly high in luster and consistency. Being a low mileage example there are virtually no dings or dents which you would normally expect on any car of this age still sporting its original paint. There are some unusual scratches in 3 of the glass panels which I cannot explain (see pix). A fellow enthusiast suggested it cold have been caused by an ice window scraper.

The interior burl walnut wood finishes are perfect. These were redone by us several years ago when we were maintaining the car. They were showing early signs of the clear coat hair-line cracking. On a lesser example of a car, we would not have redone them as they were not so bad but on this example being so otherwise beautiful, we elected to re do them. This includes the dash, centre console and door cappings. These are now like brand new with some 20+ coats of clear lacquer wet-sanded between coats to provide a very deep glass-like luster. The Connolly hides are pretty much without marks or blemishes with only a slight showing on the driver side bolster, and presents very elegantly. The seats are super soft and the close-up photos clearly show their almost perfect condition (nothing has been re-dyed). The dash “top-roll” and rear parcel shelf are nice. Almost all Spirits and Spurs from 1981 thru to the late 90s have suffered sun and heat damage which causes the leather to dry and contract. Especially around the windshield vents. The headliner is simply “like new” and the carpets still “wool-ball” like new ones.

We think the interior would look divine with a set of dark green lambs-wool moutons fitted (see pic below). If you agree, please let us know and we can supply at an extra charge.

Having spent almost all its life indoors and in the last 30 years, climate controlled storage at all times, the car is very clean and dry and there are absolutely no signs of rust. Mechanically the car has been well maintained. The condition and presentation under the hood is excellent testimony to this. It was not even cleaned for the photos. The mileage is not verifiable by independent receipts but upon close inspection; under the hood, the underside, inside the doors, etc, there can be no question to its authenticity.

This car has spent all its life in climate controlled storage when not in use.

~~ Presenting as a totally original Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, this is a beautiful and very fine example that presents as a true 9½ out of 10 driver quality car. You could confidently drive this Spirit “as-is” to your next Rolls-Royce meet with the intention of winning a prize. It is that good! ~~

International bidders always welcome.
